Dealing with the Obstacles to Puja

Guruji gives a short verse and a visualization for clearing what blocks your sadhana, and names the inner feelings that really are the obstacles.

From the book Understanding Sri Chakra Puja (1998) by Sri Amritananda Natha Saraswati (Guruji), edited from questions asked by Devi Parvati at Devipuram. Shared on Guruji's blog, posted by Vira Chandra. Originally published at amritananda-natha-saraswati.blogspot.com on 20 April 2016.

Guruji's teaching, word for word

Apasarpantu te bhūtāḥ ye bhūtāḥ bhuvi saṁsthitāḥ

Ye bhūtā vighna-kartarāḥ te naśyantu Śivājñayā

Once you have become the ball of light, you have become Śiva, capable of projecting a laser beam through your third eye, and you have become Śakti who can give nourishment by a mere look of compassion. You have the power to command the elements. As Śiva you say that:

“All those elements apasarpantu — may they go away — te bhūtāḥ ye bhūtāḥ — which elements — bhuvi saṁsthitāḥ — are residing on the ground near me — ye bhūtāḥ — and those elements — vighna-kartarāḥ — which are obstructing the progress of my sādhana — te naśyantu Śivājñayā — may they be destroyed by Śiva’s order.”

So saying, you burn them up from the fire of your third eye which shoots out like a destructive laser beam. Visualize them as crooked beings, see them burn up.

The feelings that bind you such as lust, anger, greed, jealousy, preoccupation with security — all these are called bhūtas which create obstacles for you. They reside in the security center, the Mūlādhāra Cakra (bhuvi saṁsthitāḥ). So having become Śiva you make sure that they are burnt up.

How this shows up in Kaula practice

This step comes right after the Viraja Homa. Once you hold the ball of light, you act from that strength, not from a small self.

Guruji points the obstacle inward. The beings you send away are also your own lust, anger, greed, jealousy and fear for security. This is why the work stays close to the ground and the first chakra.

Learn the verse and the visualization from a teacher in the lineage, so the practice stays steady and safe.
