A summary of the excerpt

This post is short and is summarised here, with one short quote. The full text is on Guruji's blog.

The post says that self-directed learning is where sadhana is ultimately meant to go. A student is not meant to hang on to the guru for every direction for several years. It is not limited to chanting. Most of what Aiya has learned came from reading hundreds of books.

Years after he was separated from his guru, Aiya returned to Devipuram and performed a Maha Shodashi homam and a Maha Pratyangira homam there. Afterwards Guruji told him he was very happy to see all the knowledge Aiya had received directly from the Devi herself. The post explains that this does not mean the Mother appeared and taught him. It means she showed her grace to him through his own effort to learn about her.

Engaging in self-directed learning is where we are ultimately to go with our sādhana.

What this means in practice

A guru gives a start, a mantra and a way to practise. After that the work is yours. You read, you sit, you ask questions, and you test what you learn in your own life.

In Kaula practice, Devi is met inside, in nature and in worship. The post says the same grace can come through study. Reading and effort are not apart from devotion.

Guruji attained mahasamadhi in October 2015. Guru Amma Annapurnamba guides the lineage today. Please take practices only from a teacher, and let this page be about the spirit of learning.
